Outdoor motion sensor lighting helps to provide security and safety for the exterior of the home. Outdoor lights help you negotiate walkways, steps, and entryways to your home in the dark; and help you determine whether lurkers are present. Exterior lights keep lurkers from hanging out around your home, since they don't want to be seen.
Motion detector lights turn on and off automatically. This reduces the chance you will stumble on the walkway or stairs and keeps you from fumbling for your keys at the door. They are also designed to prevent burglers or lurkers from coming near your home and can startle them into leaving if they do. Motion sensor lights are also economical and eco friendly, since they save electricity and only come on when needed.
Outdoor motion sensor lighting can be set up in any area that needs protection. They can be set to cover a certain radius and detect motion within that radius and turn on. The direction and angle width can be adjusted to capture motion within that range, thus preventing triggering by ambient motion (ie. kids playing next door). Many motion detector lights can be adjusted to stay on for a certain amount of time before turning off again.
There are two types of motion detector security systems: active and passive.
. Passive detection uses body heat to detect the object. The placement of the sensors is important with this type of detection method as it determines its effectiveness. If the sensor is placed too close to one heat source, it will be less sensitive to other heat sources and become less effective. If the sensor is placed too far, it won't get triggered.
. Active motion sensors are operated by radar signals or ultrasonic waves. When there is a break in the signal, the sensor is triggered and the light turns on.
There are additional motion sensor lighting systems:
. Those powered by solar energy - Solar powered security light is very eco friendly and saves on your power bill. You can also purchase a system with battery backup.
. LED motion sensor lights - LED lights are also energy efficient and use as much as 80-90% less electricity. Combine this quality with a motion detector and very little energy gets used.
. Dual flood light sensors - A dual flood lighting system will light up an entire area with a brights security flood lights in case an unexpected situation occurs.
. And those controlled by a remote - Remote controlled security motion detectors make regular motion sensor lighting even more convenient. They enable you to manage the settings from the comfort and safety of your home.

We have motion-sensor lighting on the back of all of the houses in our little subdivision. It makes it so much nicer and safer when you come home after dark. Plus, our cluster mailboxes are on a little street that goes behind our homes, so it makes it very convenient when you go to get your mail in the dark. The lights turn on for you as you walk down the lane. I love them. And I agree that it’s a great idea to install them, if only for the power that’s saved by having those lights all turn off automatically.
Thanks for explaining the difference between active and passive types of motion detectors. I was wondering how people with children and pets deal with this problem.
The passive detection system sounds quite interesting, as it seems like it would reduce activation from normal street traffic. I will have to look into the sensitivity specs to see if they will be an effective method of security lighting for my house. That’s what I love about the Internet, you learn something new everyday – Thanks.
I think these days it makes perfect sense to go for detectable light sources – especially where burglars are concerned. It may just make them think someone is coming to see what it is they are up to.
Its the same for your garden sheds, or other valuables such as a mailbox on your wall – all need extra security these days. What a shame we live in such a poor soceity where this is what we have to do for all our belongings.
My daughter just turned 14 and now teenage boys are starting to circle the house like sharks. I think this motion detector will be a good deterrent for a while. I’m sure at some point I’ll have to get a camera system too, but I want to wait as long as I can to do this.
I think motion sensor lights, especially those that are solar-powered really cool. The solar power makes it pretty much self-sufficient and the motion sensor makes it a lot more energy-efficient.

Very helpful video. The energy and cost savings of using energy efficient lighting in motion sensors makes installing these lights an easy choice.
